Metro AS, the subsidiary of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), has adorned all metro and tram lines in Istanbul with flags for the celebration of the April 23 National Sovereignty and Children’s Day. Istanbulites experienced the enthusiasm of the National Sovereignty and Children’s Day in this way as celebrations couldn’t be held across the country due to COVID-19. However, April 23 was marked at the government level, while children and citizens celebrated in their homes due to the curfew within the scope of the pandemic measures. April 23 is the day that the Grand National Assembly of Turkey was founded in 1920. The ‘founding father’ of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, presented April 23 as a national for children. The National Sovereignty and Children’s Day is not only celebrated in the country, but also in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Kosovo as the ‘Memorial Day of Kosovo Turks’.
