Turkish Central Bank (CBRT) Governor Hafize Gaye Erkan said on Friday in a statement on social media platform X that she resigned.
Erkan cited a defamation campaign against her and said she was resigning to protect her family including her baby.
Media reported last month allegations that Erkan’s family was involved in the central bank’s affairs. Erkan had denied the allegations.
Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek made a statement after CBRT Governor Erkan asked for a pardon from her post.
Saying that Erkan’s decision was “personal and at her own discretion”, Simsek wished success to the new governor of CBRT to be appointed “in line with his recommendation”.
Turkey will have a 5th Central Bank Governor in 5 years. Erkan lasted 9 months.
