Mersin International Port Management INC. (MIP) plans to create an additional berth capacity with the Mersin Port Expansion Project, costing USD 375m. The expansion will push MIP’s capacity up to two vessels at a time and 3.6 million TEU containers per year. The East Mediterranean Hub, opened in 2016, will be extended 380 meters allowing for two 400-meter length mega vessels at a time. The extension will also enable competitive freights and shorter transit times with the increasing number of direct services. Mersin International Port directly serves five continents with a total capacity of 2.6 million TEU containers and 10 million tonnes of conventional cargo. The port handled two million TEU containers and 7.6 million tonnes of cargo in 2020.
