Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov told reporters that Turkey has applied for full membership in BRICS, a rising emerging countries’ alliance in a multipolar world order.
Speaking to reporters at the 9th Eastern Economic Forum, Ushakov said that Turkey has applied for full membership, and the BRICS countries will consider Ankara’s request, Sputnik reported. According to the report, “Turkiye has applied for full membership [in BRICS]. We will consider it,” Ushakov told reporters.
BRICS was established in 2009 as a cooperation platform for the largest emerging economies, uniting Brazil, Russia, India and China. South Africa joined the group in 2010. On January 1, BRICS expanded its membership to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
Recently, Azerbaijan officially applied for membership in BRICS.
AK Party spokesperson Omer Celik said, “It is clear that we want to become a member of BRICS. The process is ongoing, we will share any concrete developments. Our President has expressed that Turkey wants to take part in important platforms, including BRICS.”
Erdoğan will attend the summit in Russia
Russian Vice President Yuri Ushakov stated that President Erdogan had accepted the invitation to attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan. The current chair, Russia, will host the summit from October 22 to 24.
