Turkstat announced that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 points compared to the previous month to 8.8 percent in December 2023. The idle labor force rate, defined as broad-defined unemployment, increased by 2.1 points on a monthly basis to 24.7 percent, reaching the highest rate of the series, excluding the pandemic period.
The number of unemployed people aged 15 and over in Turkey decreased by 12 thousand people in December 2023 compared to the previous month and stood at 3 million 98 thousand.
Unemployment rate decreased by 1.5 points compared to the same month of the previous year.
Youth unemployment rate, which covers the 15-24 age group, decreased by 0.8 percentage points in December compared to the previous month and became 15.5 percent.
Seasonally adjusted number of employed people increased by 399 thousand people in December compared to the previous month and reached 32 million 56 thousand.
The employment rate increased by 0.6 points to 48.8 percent. This rate was calculated as 66.1 percent for men and 31.9 percent for women.
Seasonally adjusted labor force increased by 387 thousand people compared to the previous month and reached 35 million 154 thousand. The labor force participation rate increased by 0.5 points and realized as 53.5 percent. The labor force participation rate was determined as 71.1 percent for men and 36.3 percent for women.
The seasonally and calendar adjusted average weekly actual working hours of those who were on the job in the reference period decreased by 0.1 hours on a monthly basis to 43.7 hours in December.
The idle labor force ratio, which consists of time-dependent underemployment, potential labor force and unemployed, increased by 2.1 percentage points compared to the previous month and became 24.7 percent in December 2023. The combined ratio of time-based underemployment and unemployed was 16.4 percent, while the combined ratio of potential labor force and unemployed was estimated as 17.9 percent.
