Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, said that they are looking forward to Turkey’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) Law.
Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey, visited ASO 2nd OIZ hosted by Mete Caglayan together with ASO President Seyit Ardic.
Ambassador Meyer-Landrut stated that the contributions of both industrialists and consumers to the process of reducing carbon emissions are important.
Emphasizing that there is no turning back from the process of reducing emissions in industry and energy production, Ambassador Landrut said that the ETS is one of the important tools for the zero carbon target and that they look forward to Turkey’s enactment of this law that will increase cooperation.
Seyit Ardic, President of the Ankara Chamber of Industry (ASO), stated that Turkey should be a country that benefits from carbon pricing, not a country that is harmed, while Mete Caglayan, President of ASO 2nd OIZ and Member of the Board of Directors of ASO, stated that they started the race in this field one step ahead of other OIZs with the Green Route of Industry study.
ASO President Seyit Ardic said that as industrialists, they are aware of their responsibilities to the city they live in with the principle of a greener economy and sustainability while producing on the one hand. Ardıç underlined that awareness of the concepts of green industry and circular economy is increasing. Reminding that the transitional period practices of the Border Carbon Regulation started as of October 1, Ardic stated that Turkey should also have a regulation to make the carbon tax and emission trading system the norm.
Ambassador Landrut underlined that ASO 2nd OIZ’s activities for green transformation are very impressive and said, “As those who make the first investment, you will be the winners of tomorrow.”
“We have determined the green transformation route with firm steps”
Mete Caglayan, President of ASO 2nd OIZ, noted that they determined their green transformation route with firm steps by creating their own action plans immediately after the publication of the EU Green Memorandum.
Emphasizing that they planned their work with the awareness of the effects of EU regulations focused on climate change and sustainability on industrialists, Mete Caglayan said, “Thanks to the work we carried out with our Industry’s Green Route project, which we started long before the legal regulations on Green OIZ, we started the Green OIZ race one step ahead of other OIZs. This gave us the advantage of both taking part in pilot studies and being the first OIZ to be audited by TSE in this regard.”
“Companies must manage risks correctly”
Seyit Ardic said, “It is very important that we can be on the side of countries that benefit from carbon pricing, not suffer from it,” and underlined that companies should also reveal the non-financial values they create for society and the environment and manage their sustainability risks correctly.
Emphasizing that they have initiated a project to manage the impacts of the Green Deal on ASO members, Ardic said, “We will continue to work in coordination and cooperation with all our stakeholders for an industry that focuses on long-term goals, considers the benefit to society and structures mitigation efforts with science-based goals.”
